Exact impulsive gravitational waves in spacetimes of constant curvature
Exact solutions exist which describe impulsive gravitational waves propagating in Minkowski, de Sitter, or anti-de Sitter universes. These may be either nonexpanding or expanding. Both cases in each background are reviewed here from a unified point of view. All the main methods for their construction are described systematically: the Penrose “cut and paste” method, explicit construction of cont...
متن کاملHigh frequency sources of gravitational waves
Sources of high frequency gravitational waves are reviewed. Gravitational collapse, rotational instabilities and oscillations of the remnant compact objects are potentially important sources of gravitational waves. Significant and unique information for the various stages of the collapse, the evolution of protoneutron stars and the details of the equations of state of such objects can be drawn ...
متن کاملOn Gravitational Shock Waves in Curved Spacetimes
Some years ago Dray and ’t Hooft found the necessary and sufficient conditions to introduce a gravitational shock wave in a particular class of vacuum solutions to Einstein’s equations. We extend this work to cover cases where non-vanishing matter fields and cosmological constant are present. The sources of gravitational waves are massless particles moving along a null surface such as a horizon...
متن کاملExact solutions for impulsive gravitational waves∗
All impulsive waves (with no tails) in vacuum backgrounds of constant curvature (i.e. Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter) are classified according to whether they are expanding or non-expanding. It is demonstrated that the expanding waves may, in some sense, be regarded as impulsive limits of Robinson–Trautman type N solutions.
متن کاملThe Utilization of High-Frequency Gravitational Waves for Global Communications
For over 1000 years electromagnetic radiation has been utilized for long-distance communication. heliographs, telegraphs, telephones and radio have all served our previous communication needs. Nevertheless, electromagnetic radiation has one major difficulty: it is easily absorbed. In this paper we consider a totally different radiation, a radiation that is not easily absorbed: gravitational rad...
